Built and Natural Environment

For far too long, we have acted as if the worlds we construct–the built environment–are independent of the natural environment, except, perhaps, to the extent that the landscape helps determine how we situate our homes, offices, and roads. But even in that regard, our actions–blasting our way through obstacles; ignoring, in the case of Western North Carolina in particular, the demands of our slopes–have created unintended consequences we neglect at our peril.

The Built and Natural Environment must be considered as a whole: an interactive system which we must better understand and for which we must plan more effectively.
